I am getting some strange results under these two Australian States. Instead of the normal cities or regions, I am getting Shires, which doesn't make any sense.

And once you pick a shire, it stops: there is no list of additional cities or regions, like there is with other Australia States.

Can someone take a look at Queensland and Victoria and see if there is a problem?

If you look at this link:

http://ws.geonames.org/children?geonameId=2145234

It doesn't appear these are the correct children for that state.

UPDATE August 13, 2009
For example Twin Waters shows a parent id of 2152274

but the Queensland list of children does not include it.

So Victoria and Queensland seem to be having the same issue of incorrect children on the geonames site.

I have removed the Shires from the database. They have been abolished some years ago.
