Hi all,

my first post here

I noticed that all the Italian regions are called in the right Italian way "Regione xxxx" but Tuscany..
Is there a reason for that?

If it can be useful the correct name is "Regione Toscana"
other 2 corrections to normalize the list are
"Regione Autonoma Sicilia"
"Regione Autonoma Sardegna"

thank you!

bye

Ciao Michele

I have changed the main name of Toscana.

With the autonomous regions I am not sure. Here they list five of them:
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regione_a_statuto_speciale

Maybe we should add the long name with "Regione Autonoma" for those as an alternate name.
What do you think?

Best

Marc

Hi Marc!

thanks for the fast reply and fix!
I saw the link to wikipedia and, as they refer to certain laws, very probably those are the official names so you can keep it like they are, not a big problem.

In common language all the regions are referred just with their names.
example: "Regione Toscana" becames "la Toscana", "Regione Veneto" just "il Veneto" ( il and la are articles ) and so on. Anyway for geonames I'd keep the official name of course.

As you suggest for the autonomous regions I'd put the "Regione Autonoma" in the alternate names and keep just Regione XXXX as the main name because we hardly refer to the fact that are autonomous if not needed.

so for my region "Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia" it would be like this:
name and asciiname: "Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia"
alternatenames: "Friuli", "Friuli Venezia Giulia","Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia","Friûl Vignesie Julie","Friaul Julisch Venetien","Furlanija Julijska krajina" etc ( the last 3 are in Friulan, German and Slovene )

hope it helps!

Ciao

PS: if you have other questions about Italy just ask I'll be happy to help

Hi Michele

Please feel free to make the changes yourself. It is very simple, you just need a user account:

nearby, I found something that seems a bit odd: at 43.97895 / 10.5457 api.geonames.org returns to GeoSetter the region "Toskana," but when I look up the region at http://www.geonames.org/maps/google, I get

Borgo a Mozzano ca. 205 m
Borgo a Mozzano
Italy » Tuscany » Provincia di Lucca » Borgo a Mozzano
populated place
population : 7358
N 43° 58' 44'' E 10° 32' 44''
43.97895 / 10.5457
GeoNameId : 3181815

which looks fairly correct. Does the API pull from a different database?

There are several datasets for the api: http://www.geonames.org/export/ws-overview.html, I don't know which service geosetter is using in which circumstance. Maybe it is returning the content of the adm1 attribute. If you say 'region' this would be correct.

I'll check with geonames and get back to the forum.
