Do you maintain an association between wikipedia articles and GEONames unique ids? Is that something that one can download? If not, can we download the wikipedia articles DB in the same fashion as the placelist database?
Thanks for your great site

Hi Round-Planet
Yes, we keep a relation between most of the geo referenced wikipedia articles and the geonames entries. This relation, however, is not available for download. If you need it I can send it to you in an email. You are the first to ask for it and as long as not many others would like to have it, it is less work to send it via email rather than writing code for a daily dump.
Regards,
Marc

I think that had people known such a list existed there would have been a great demand for it.
I'd like a copy too.
Maybe as a compromise to writing a daily dump you could just post a link to what you have now and update it monthly.
Thanks for the great work.

Hello,
Excellent ! I was really looking for something similar.
Would it be possible to obtain a fresh dump please if that's possible ?
Your last one is about 1 year old.
Thanks a lot !

Is there relation between a geoname_id and a wikipedia_id ?
From the dump I can see an id linked to an ID from Wikipedia in each available language.
I also can see an id linked to another database with some data like coordinates....
But I can't seem to find a geoname_id.
Is it okay or did I make a mistake ?
Thanks a lot,
Ugo

I second the request for an update of the dump. Is this something that others can assist with to make it happen on a regular basis?
Thanks.

I do it as often as I manage to find the time. Unfortunately it is a real pain as the wikipedia geo-templates are extremely volatile and the wikipedia-contributors cannot agree on a common template. At the contrary, with every run of the parser a great number of articles disappear from the result because the template it has been using has been changed into something new and the parser needs to be adapted to the changed templates. There are literally hundreds or even thousands of competing templates how coordinates can be included in a wikipedia article. It is a real mess.

Hi there,
I would also be interested in the wiki table. I do use the commercial webservices, but I need to cut down on requests
Not because of credits, but I mash up quite a lot of APIs and it just takes too long to recieve all of them in an acceptable time for the user (even when I try to cache a lot of it).
It is definitely not due to the speed of the commercial geoname webservice (I am very happy with them), but I am looking for ways to replace the one or another webservice with something DB driven.
So, any chance to get a more or less fresh dump?
Thanks in advance
Nils
edit:
@Marc: I can imagine the pain. I am working on an api aggregator, and this can be frustrating sometimes. Parsing that much more or less "unstructured" data must be really hard. From what files to you try to parse the contents. I am interested in a solution to this and want to dig a little deeper into the problem.

Hi Marc, I'm afraid it's another bump for an update
Quick Q: how come the wiki entries aren't included in the main country data files?
Jimbo.

Another request for the dump. I might even contribute to your favorite 'charity' or help you in some other way, since it will save me some work!
